ROME — Italian state broadcaster RAI said Tuesday that it has signed a deal to make parts of its massive content archive available on YouTube.

RAI’s move stands in contrast to the stance of rival Mediaset, which announced in July that it would sue YouTube parent Google for 500 million euro ($680 million) for carrying Mediaset content without permission.

RAI said it will guard against illegal use of the content through YouTube’s VideoID technology, which allows content producers to track usage.
