R/GA at the SXSW 2011 has introduced Social Media Hell, a social gaming app for the biggest social event in the digital world, the SXSW.

Social media has changed our lives. It has sparked revolution in the Middle East. It has also given us self-proclaimed “ninjas” and “gurus.” As designers, marketers, and technologists, we have a love-hate relationship with social media. Socialmediahell.com presents a view into the dark side of social media, through the lens of the biggest social media party of the year, South by Southwest Interactive. Part game, part data visualization, socialmediahell.com is a mobile site that invites participants to unlock seven different levels inspired by “Dante’s Inferno” and defined by tweets and Foursquare data:

  • Lust: what/whom people are loving at SXSW
  • Debauchery: check-ins at Austin bars
  • Gluttony: check-ins at Austin BBQ and Tex-Mex joints
  • Greed: the most aggressive overtweeters
  • Wrath: what/whom people are hating at SXSW
  • Idolatry: who’s being tweeted about most at SXSW
  • Vanity: who’s “tweeting too hard” about themselves; i.e., naked self-aggrandizement

And finally a Leaderboard with users more active in the last 60 minutes in hell of SXSW.
