Something new lands on our iPad and it comes from Berlin. Interaction and interface principles we usually used via an app, Aside Magazine is bringing to the browser. No download, no App Store only smart and beautiful HTML5.

Two guys, Nico Engelhardt (Graphic Designer) and Johannes Ippen (Designer), living and working in Berlin (in Germany, not the one in New Jersey) released this new magazine easily readable with Safari on iPad.

Back in May 2010, soon after the first iPad launch in April, we (and a lot of online magazines) wrote about the Sport Illustrated HTML5 prototype from Google I/O.

One year later, Aside Mag is the first real magazine that using HTML5 takes us away from “Appiness” and opens a new era in browser-based tablet (touch?) interaction.

Someone could argue Aside’s HTML5 and interaction optimization only for the iPad browser. As Dave Nattriss wrote in the Aside trailer video available on Vimeo:

What’s debatable is whether it’s actually an HTML5 magazine if it only supports one particular browser (the iPad browser). HTML5 is supposed to ‘downgrade’ gracefully.

Aside Mag is the FIRST. Other magazines will hopefully arrive soon and then we will see how HTML5 will change interactions experience browsers-wide on tablets/mobiles (thanks to mobile browsers developers?).

Microsoft tried that with Windows Mobile… and we all know how that turned out.

At Google I/O , Sports Illustrated editor Terry McDonell took the stage to show off a version of the magazine in HTML5. It looked pretty much like SI‘s tablet prototype he showed me last December, except it isn’t an app. It’s all in the browser, with great fonts, big photos, videos, drag-and-drop capability, search, and all the rest.

The snapshot above shows a pop-up navigation circle which lets you do different things with the page such as share it via Twitter, Facebook, or email, and dive into related photos or videos. McDonell also demonstrated how you can drag stories around in the table of contents to rearrange their order, just like in the tablet app. Pages can have not only photos, but embedded videos, which can be saved for later viewing. There is even a little Google Buzz widget which shows what people are saying about the story or the people in it.

These prototypes point to a more Web-friendly future for magazines, where they can have much of the graphic and interactive richness of an app right on the good ol’ Web. It’s not quite to the point of an iPad app just yet, but it will get there. I’ve seen the exact same tablet app, and it is not much different. And after all, stories in an iPad app don’t show up in Google search. HTML5 magazines are much less likely to become tomorrow’s CD-ROMS than tablet apps.

We’ve just spent some time handling Microsoft’s just-announced Kin One and Kin Two, and we’re not sure what to think; the keyboards have surprisingly good feel, particularly the One (think Palm Pre levels of usability on the One, for example — we wouldn’t be surprised if it was their benchmark) and the phones generally feel pretty solid. In fact, we’d go so far to say that this is a marked improvement in hardware quality for Sharp than any of its Sidekicks ever offered. The problem is, we just can’t get over the fact that the software is extremely limited in its scope — yes, we understand that it’s by design, but does this so-called “upload generation” of socially-connected teens and twentysomethings really want a phone that they can’t download games to? That’s the million-dollar question that Verizon will be answering over the next few months, it seems.

The basic meat-and-potatoes parts of the user interface — the Loop, the Spot, and so on — work pretty smoothly, without any hiccups. The browser stuttered in places, but it wasn’t unusably bad; hopefully this is something that’ll improve over time, since the Kins support over-the-air updates. As for the interface concept, it’s

Maybe our favorite part of the device, though, was Zune Pass, which streams over WiFi or 3G. Yes, you heard us right: you can search for and stream basically anything out of the Zune Pass collection over Verizon’s EV-DO, then play it in the background while you go about your merry way. It worked really well, and the Zune UI seems to translate pretty well onto a display as small as the One’s tiny QVGA unit.

We know that the One is positioned as the slightly lower-end device on account of its 5 megapixel cam (the Two has and half the internal storage, but we actually came away liking it more — it’s the only one of the two that looks truly unique, because the Two just looks like any old landscape slider smartphone (not to say that’s necessarily a bad thing). The front of both devices is graced with a single metallic button to offset an otherwise clean glossy black bezel — this button functions as Back, not Home, so if you’re multiple levels deep into the UI you’ll only be taken back one. You can still hold the button down to get back to the home screen, fortunately, and both the One and Two have dedicated camera buttons — Microsoft’s making no secret of the fact that image and video capture are a huge push for these devices.
